Shipping and Shipping Prospects in Cyprus

In a rapidly changing environment, where the shipping industry is facing key challenges, but still maintains its key role in the global economy, we are planning to explore the opportunities that Cyprus is providing to the global transport industry and the way it facilitates the business needs of ship-owners and operators. Marios Demetriades

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works

Marios Demetriades has been Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works since March 2014. He has focused mainly on the Maritime and Aviation sectors, recently completing the commercialization of the country's largest commercial port, Limassol, attracting international port operators such as Eurogate and DP World. Before joining the government, he was a Manager at Piraeus Bank for six years. Prior to that, he worked at Laiki Bank Group for approximately 9 years in the Investment Management sector. He has been a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute since 2000 and is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus. From 1996 to 1998 he was manager of the local office of Ernst&Young in Paphos. He trained as a Chartered Accountant with BDO Stoy Hayward in London and studied Business, Finance and Economics at the University of East Anglia, UK.

 

Platon Monokrousos

Dr. Platon Monokrousos is Group Chief Economist of Eurobank Ergasias S.A., and Senior Visiting Fellow at the LSE. He is Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Bank Association, a member of the Board of Directors of Grivalia Properties REIC and Vice President Governing Committee of the Hellenic Institute of Financial Management. Previously, he held high-level positions in leading financial institutions (inc. ABN Amro and Bank of America). He holds a BA in theoretical Mathematics, Masters Degrees in Economics (Clark University, USA) and Business Administration (Boston College, USA) and a Diploma in Business and Corporate Leadership from Harvard Business Publishing. He received his PhD from the University of Athens. He has written on contemporary macroeconomic and financial issues and he is co-editor of the book "A Financial Crisis Manual: Reflections and the Road Ahead".

Acis Montanios

Acis Montanios, born in Cyprus, studied law at the Council of Legal Education in London and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple. He served in the Cyprus National Guard as a Second Lieutenant. He joined the law firm of Montanios &Montanios and is now its CEO. He specialized in all aspects of maritime and admiralty law and has contributed articles in Shipping Finance publications. He served as a member of the Ad Hoc Legal Committee of the Cyprus Shipping Council and as a member of the Law Reform Committee on Merchant Shipping. Since 1990 he serves as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Mali in Cyprus and was decorated by the French Government with the insignia of the Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Merite.

Philippos Philis

Chairman & CEO, Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd

Philippos Philis is the founder of Lemissoler and has been MD since its establishment in 1996. He is a Chairman and CEO of the Group since 2009. In 1997, he started IMCL, a feeder operator in Baltic Sea which became the market leader and merged with Unifeeder in 2009. He held a Dipl. Ing. in Mechanical Engineering from RWTH Aachen. He is specialized in Expert Applications in Logistics and completed the Private Equity and Venture Capital executive course at the Harvard Business School. He is an elected member and the VP of the BOD of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber. He is a member of the BOD of European Communities Shipowners' Associations, of International Chamber of Shipping, of DNV GL Cyprus Committee. He is an elected member of American Bureau of Shipping, a member of the Scientific & Technical Chamber of Cyprus and the IMarEST. He is also a member of the BOD of USB Bank.
